The Seventh Son: Two Unreconciled Strivings
The Westfield State College Downtown Art Gallery, 105 Elm St., Westfield, will feature paintings by Omarthan Clarke in his exhibition, “The Seventh Son: Two Unreconciled Strivings,” which explores the duality theme expressed by African-American scholar W.E.B. Du Bois. The exhibit runs Sept. 8 through Oct. 3. A public artist reception is scheduled 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. Clarke, a native of Jamaica, was raised in Springfield.

Late Summer Wildflowers
The Sanctuary provides an opportunity to see a variety of native wildflower species, some of which are more common here than elsewhere in the area. This walk may follow the same path as on May 17, but the change of season will make for a very different list of species this time. Asters and goldenrods are becoming dominant by now, but many others will also be seen.

Valerie will explain the care of flowers for longer life, the mechanics of constructing an arrangement- including supplies and tools needed, how to incorporate elements from your own garden and the use of different flowers and colors.

Westfield is known as the "Whip City" and was founded as a town in 1669 then later as a city in 1920. Located in the heart of western Massachusetts in Hampden County, Westfield is the second largest land area in Massachusetts.
